Fortezza Castle

The biggest fortress of the Venetian Era is the dominant Fortezza Castle, located beside the Old Town of Rethymno. It was built between 1573-1580 by the Venetians, in order to protect the residents from the Turkish threat. It has a star-shaped figure and a total length of 1300 meters. It is so large, that it could host and protect the entire population of the town, even now!

It is situated on the hill Paleokastro, which was chosen due to its unobstructed view to the land and sea. The Castle is visible from almost every corner of the city and is truly magnificent especially at nights, with its carefully designed lighting!

Inside the fort are several barracks, a church and storage rooms. In addition there is the theater “Erofili”, which hosts events every summer, under the Cretan starry sky. Theatrical performances, concerts, and exhibitions make Fortezza frequently visited every summer.
